Northampton host Southampton in the EFL Cup first round in a clash between two sides with contrasting league statuses and ambitions.

The League One side come into the tie after a mixed pre-season and a 3-1 defeat to Wigan in their league opener, but will look to draw confidence from their home win over Birmingham in July.

Southampton, recently relegated from the Premier League, are still adjusting to life in the Championship but retain a squad packed with top-flight experience.

Russell Martin’s side showed flashes of attacking quality in pre-season, including a draw with Brighton, and will be favourites to progress.

Northampton, however, will aim to use home advantage and cup unpredictability to spring a surprise.
