Conference League – League Phase, Matchday 6 Preview
The final matchday of the UEFA Conference League league phase always brings some pressure and drama. Some teams are chasing a place in the top eight, others are already safe but still have work to finish.
Thursday night gives us a bit of everything – from a Premier League side looking to secure progression at home, to a couple of tight matches where one mistake could undo weeks of good results.
Four Thursdays games to bet on
Crystal Palace vs KuPS
Selhurst Park (21.00 CET)
Crystal Palace arrive knowing that a win could push them into the top eight and avoid the play-off round altogether. Their 3-0 win away at Shelbourne showed just how comfortable they can look at this level, even after the weekend loss to Manchester City. Back at Selhurst Park, the Eagles should feel confident – they’ve generally handled their European games well.
KuPS need to win for a different reason. The Finnish champions have struggled badly away from home in Europe, often failing to score at all. With their domestic season already finished, sharpness could also be an issue – considering they realistically need all three points to have any hope of making it into the top 24.
Prediction: Crystal Palace to Win & Score Over 1.5 Goals

Mainz vs Samsunspor
MEWA Arena (21.00 CET)
This is one of the most important games of the night. Both teams start inside the top eight, but there’s a strong chance only one of them stays there!
Mainz look more organised under new coach Urs Fischer. A 2-2 draw away at Bayern Munich last weekend boosted their confidence, and their European home games have been the bright spot in an otherwise tough season.
Samsunspor started the league phase strongly but have lost momentum at the worst possible time. They’ve now gone six matches without a win and have dropped points from winning positions in Europe. However, their away form still remains good – this has all the signs of a tense match, where neither side wants to make the first big mistake!
Prediction: BTTS: Yes
AEK Athens vs Universitatea Craiova
OPAP Arena (21.00 CET)
AEK Athens are in a great place right now. They’ve already secured qualification and know that a win here will send them straight into the round of 16. Their form has been excellent, with ten wins in their last eleven matches, and they’ve been especially strong at home. They tend to finish strongly, often scoring late – a useful trait against Craiova.
Craiova have been solid away from home recently – seven unbeaten trips in all competitions. Still, they’ve struggled to create chances in this league phase and should focus more on staying in the game than going all out for a win. They sit just one point above elimination and know a defeat could knock them out!
Prediction: AEK Athens to Score in the Second Half
Strasbourg vs Breiðablik
Stade de la Meinau (21.00 CET)
Strasbourg have already secured their qualification and only need a win to finish top of the league phase. Their domestic form has dipped slightly, but in Europe they’ve been calm and reliable, especially at home. They haven’t lost a major European home game in nearly three decades!
Breiðablik face a near-impossible task. They need three points, but their away record in Europe is poor (nine defeats in the last 11 continental trips), and they’ve already lost both league-phase road games without scoring. Even if Strasbourg rotate a little, the gap in quality and experience is hard to ignore.
Prediction: Strasbourg to Win
